Through a concentrated emphasis on optimizing learning conditions that prioritized Basic Needs, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Needs, and Academic Needs, the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center underwent a transformative journey. This evolution lifted the facility from closure to achieving recognition as one of the foremost educational institutions in Virginia.

We will clarify the concept of equity in education. I'll provide tangible instances of disparities and strategies to guarantee every student receives fair educational opportunities. Participants will leave speech energized with practical solutions to help end education inequities.
Participants will acquire strategies for conducting audits of their educational institutions' environments, as well as crafting comprehensive plans to provide support for both educators and students of color.
We will identify supports needed in order for students to thrive in an antiracist school environment. The values normalized by the dominant culture will be interrogated within the school context. Curriculum representation, assets-based instruction, and culturally relevant practice will be emphasized as promising supports to engage all students.
We will take a deep dive into disproportionality in school discipline policies and practices. Participants will review research related to targeted school discipline practices and policies and make recommendations based on an anti-racist lens.
We will discuss how the Brown vs Board of Education decision led to the elimination of Black educational capital and how it can be replaced in our schools today. Participants will also examine how the implementation of the ruling eliminated educational autonomy in Black America.
Participants will engage in discussions regarding the school-to-prison pipeline, examining current data trends. Furthermore, proactive strategies for school discipline will be explored with the aim of disrupting the pipeline.
Participants will be provided with innovative and novel approaches to recruit and cultivate educators , aimed at revitalizing the teacher pipeline. Additionally, strategies for supporting novice teachers while concurrently retaining experienced educators will be addressed
There is a pressing demand in America for educators and administrators who reflect the cultural diversity of the populations they serve. Participants will be equipped with empirically validated strategies tailored for schools and school districts, ensuring that students' cultural needs are effectively met.
